No insurance? Self-pay eye exams in Gilbert and Mesa
Dr. Ryan Nguyen sees self-pay patients every day we are open. Clear pricing, a real eye doctor, and you are free to take your prescription anywhere.
Independent eye doctor. Dr. Nguyen’s practice is located inside the Walmart Vision Center, but it is not owned by or affiliated with Walmart. The optical shop is independent of our practice, and you may fill your prescriptions anywhere.
Who self-pay is for
- You do not have vision insurance, or your plan has lapsed.
- Your plan is not one we accept (we accept VSP, EyeMed, UnitedHealthcare Spectera and Original Medicare Part B).
- You prefer to pay directly and keep it simple.
You do not need to explain why. Everyone is welcome.

What a comprehensive eye exam includes
A comprehensive exam is more than a glasses check. It generally includes:
- A review of your health and eye history and any symptoms.
- Measuring how well you see, and an up-to-date glasses prescription.
- An evaluation of the health of the front and back of your eyes. We recommend dilation if you haven’t had a dilated exam in the past 2 years.
- A conversation with Dr. Nguyen about the results and what to do next.
Read more on the comprehensive eye exam page.
Contact lens exams and fittings
Contact lens wearers need a contact lens exam in addition to the eye exam, because lenses must be fitted to your eyes. We fit soft spherical lenses, lenses for astigmatism (toric) and multifocal lenses. See contact lens exams and fittings.
Buy your glasses or contacts anywhere
The optical shop (the Walmart Vision Center) is independent of Dr. Nguyen’s practice. You are welcome to fill your glasses and contact lens prescriptions at that shop, online, or at any other provider you prefer.
Shopping at Walmart? Walk in for your exam
Both offices are inside Walmart Vision Centers, so you can fit an eye exam into a shopping trip. Walk-ins are welcome.
Two offices, both inside Walmart Vision Centers: Gilbert (Mon and Thu) and Mesa (Wed, Fri and Sat). Walk-ins are welcome.
Self-pay questions
Will my eyes be dilated?
We recommend a dilated eye exam if you haven’t had one in the past 2 years. Dilation lets the doctor see the back of your eye more completely. Your vision may be blurry and light-sensitive for a few hours, so bring sunglasses.
Can I get an eye exam without insurance?
Yes. Self-pay patients are welcome, and walk-ins are welcome during office hours at both of our offices.
How can I pay?
We take card, cash, and HSA/FSA cards.
Do I have to buy glasses from the Walmart Vision Center?
No. The optical shop is independent of Dr. Nguyen’s practice. Your prescription is yours, and you may fill it anywhere you like.
What if my insurance is not on your list?
You are welcome as a self-pay patient. Call either office and we can tell you whether we accept your plan or quote the self-pay price.
Is a contact lens exam included in a regular eye exam?
No. Contact lens exams include a fitting and follow-up for your lenses, so they are done in addition to the eye exam. Ask us when you call.
